Intact head of sphinx unearthed in Amphipolis

Archaeologists announce discovery of a marble head described as an ‘exquisite work of art’

The team of archaeologists working at the tomb of Amphipolis in northern Greece have unearthed an intact marble head of a sphinx, the Greek culture ministry announced on Tuesday evening.
“It is intact with a slight fracture on the noise,” the ministry said in a written statement, describing it as “as sculpture of exquisite art”. Its length is 60 cm. Archaeologist also said they found fragments of the Sphinx’s wings.
The find follows last week’s discovery of an intricate floor mosaic depicting a bearded horseman with a laurel wreath driving a chariot led by the god Hermes.
The burial site in Amphipolis, discovered in August, is, reportedly, the largest tomb ever revealed in Greece.
